URL QR Code

What a URL QR Code is and how it works

A URL QR Code is the address of your page written as a pattern of dots. Someone points a phone camera at it, sees the address and opens the site with one tap. Nobody has to spell the address out loud or copy it off a flyer: pointing a camera is quicker than typing.

https://example.com
What happens after the scan
1

Someone points a phone camera at the QR Code.

2

The address of your page appears on the screen.

3

One tap — and the site is open in the browser.

Static or dynamic: which QR Code to choose

The link goes into a single field, and the whole choice on this page is here. In the generator above it stands as two cards, “Static QR” and “Dynamic QR”, and it decides whether the address can be changed once the code is printed.

Static QR

When the address will not change again

  • The link is written into the pattern itself: the code works on its own, with no account and without us.
  • Scans are not counted — the person goes straight to the site, past the service.
  • The address cannot be changed: another page means another code and another print run.

A business card, a sign by the door, a website address on a shopfront.

Dynamic QR

When the print run has to outlive the page

  • The code goes through our short link, and where that link points is edited in your account.
  • You can see the number of scans and the days when there were more of them.
  • It needs an account: the short link lives on our side, and it has to have an owner.

Flyers, packaging, adverts, price tags, outdoor boards.

Comparison

What is the difference between a static and a dynamic QR Code?

The same pattern on paper — different options once it is printed.

Static QR URL Analytics
  • A static code is tied to its link for good, and that link cannot be changed.
  • Analytics are not available for codes like this either.
Dynamic QR URL 1 URL 2 PDF Menu Analytics
  • The link or the file the code leads to can be changed at any moment.
  • Analytics show the number of scans, the countries and the devices.
  • You can set a password, an expiry date and a limit on how many people it lets in.

Styling

A QR Code in your brand colours

Add a logo, your brand colours and the shape of the elements — and the QR Code becomes part of your design on packaging, in a menu, on a business card or in a shop window.

What you can set in the editor above
  • Logo — upload your own file.
  • Colours — set the code, the background or a gradient.
  • Shape and eyes — choose the shape of the elements.
  • Frame — add a caption and set the style.
  • Preset — save the styling for your next QR Codes.
Where to use it

Where a URL QR Code works best

Anywhere an address has to be read with the eyes and typed with the fingers: on paper, on packaging, on a screen. The code takes that step away — and noticeably more people reach the page.

Flyer, leaflet and notice

The commonest case of all: on paper something short with a picture, behind the QR Code the details, the prices and the booking form. Nobody types the address by hand, so more people get as far as the page. If the details are already laid out as a document, they will open with a PDF QR Code.

Packaging and price tag

The QR Code leads to the product page, the manual or a “how to use this” clip. A small label holds everything that did not fit into the text, and the clip is opened by a video QR Code.

Shop window, sign and trade-show stand

The shop is closed, but the QR Code in the window leads to the catalogue or to the booking page. On a trade-show stand it takes the place of a stack of brochures: people carry the link away on their phones instead of paper in a bag.

Presentation and the last slide

The room points cameras straight at the screen — nobody has to copy the address off the slide. If your contact details are on that slide, they are better served by a business card QR Code.

Car, T-shirt, giveaway

Everything that moves and everything people wear works as advertising, and a QR Code turns a glance into a visit to the site. For places like these the code is printed large and always tried from a distance.

Before you print

Four checks before it goes to the print shop

The link opens on a phone

Open the page on a phone, not on a computer: the two can look nothing alike.

The address starts with https://

Without it some cameras show text instead of a link, and the person has to copy it by hand.

For a print run — dynamic

Then the page behind the printed code can be changed when the site moves or a new campaign starts.

A test print

Point a camera at a printed sample from where people will really see it: a flyer at arm’s length, a shop window from the pavement.

Questions and answers

Common questions about URL QR Codes

The short version of what people ask most: the account, changing the address, how long it lasts, styling and statistics.

No answer here? Write to us
How do I make a QR Code for a website link?
Paste the address of the page into the field in the generator above and pick the kind of code: static, if the address will not change again, or dynamic, if the print run has to outlive a move.
Do I need an account to make a URL QR Code?
Not for a static one: paste the address, style it, download it. An account is only needed by a dynamic code — it runs through our short link, and we keep the record of where that link points right now.
Can I change the link after the QR Code is printed?
Yes, if the code is dynamic. The new address is typed into your account, and the pattern on paper stays as it was: a box of flyers outlives both a site move and the next campaign.
Do URL QR Codes expire?
A static one never does: the address lies in the pattern itself, and it needs neither us nor a use-by date. A dynamic one lives as long as your account does, within what your plan allows. Either of them can be scanned as many times as you like.
Does a long link with tracking tags still work?
It does, but length thickens the pattern, and on a small sticker that makes it harder for a camera to catch. A dynamic code has none of that trouble: the pattern holds a short link, while the long address with its tags sits in your account.
Which formats does the QR Code download in?
PNG, SVG and PDF. PNG is the one to drop into a post or an email. SVG is what a print shop asks for: it is drawn with lines, so one file covers a flyer in the hand and a board by the road without going blurry.
Can I make the QR Code in my brand colours?
Yes, and on a flyer it shows: a black square next to a branded layout looks like someone else’s sticker. You can set the colour and the gradient, the shape of the dots, the shape of the corner eyes, a frame with a caption and a picture in the middle — and the presets tab already holds combinations that cameras have no trouble with.
Will a logo in the middle stop the QR Code from scanning?
No: the pattern is drawn with error correction to spare, and the camera does not need the middle under the picture. After a heavy restyle it is worth pointing a camera at the code once — that takes a second.
What size should the QR Code be printed?
By the distance it will be caught from: a flyer in the hands needs a couple of centimetres, a shop window needs a code the size of a palm, and a roadside board needs noticeably more.
Can I see how many times the QR Code was scanned?
For a dynamic one, yes, in your account: how many in total and how they fell across the days. A static code leads to the site directly, past us, so there is nothing for us to count — only the counter on the site itself will show the numbers.
What will a person see if there is no internet?
The pattern reads either way — the address is written right into it. The page itself, though, waits for a connection, like any other link on a phone.
The link goes to a social profile, a map or a video — is there a page for that?
There is, and they are built exactly the same way — only the hints around them are different: social media QR Code, Google Maps QR Code and YouTube QR Code.
