What you can hide behind a QR Code

A code is a door, not a picture with a link: behind it can stand a document, a menu, a contact, a profile or a network password. Choose what will open for the person who points a camera at it.

Link and text

The simplest of them. An address opens in the browser, and a short text — a password, a batch number, a greeting — is shown right on the screen, without taking anyone anywhere.

Files, photos, menus and recordings

A document, a price list, a manual, a photo menu, a set of photographs, an audio guide or a clip. The file sits in your account, so it can be replaced with a new version without reprinting a single sticker.

Contacts

So that people save you in their phone first time instead of copying you off a piece of card: a card with a job title and an address, a call button, a ready-written email or a conversation already started.

Social networks

The code leads to a single profile — or to a page you put together with all your channels on it at once. You can edit that page whenever you like, while the sticker in the window stays as it is.

Everything you need right there on the spot

Get a guest onto the network without spelling the password out; take people to the door rather than to the street; ask for a review while they are still pleased.

Four types are built differently — and that is their strength. For Wi-Fi, text, phone and email the data lies in the pattern itself. A code like that needs no account, no service of ours and not even the internet: it works on its own and always. What is inside it stays as you set it, while changing the target after printing and counting scans are for the codes that live in an account.

Comparison

What is the difference between a static and a dynamic QR Code?

The same pattern on paper — different options once it is printed.

Static QR URL Analytics
  • A static code is tied to its link for good, and that link cannot be changed.
  • Analytics are not available for codes like this either.
Dynamic QR URL 1 URL 2 PDF Menu Analytics
  • The link or the file the code leads to can be changed at any moment.
  • Analytics show the number of scans, the countries and the devices.
  • You can set a password, an expiry date and a limit on how many people it lets in.

Styling

A QR Code in your brand colours

Add a logo, your brand colours and the shape of the elements — and the QR Code becomes part of your design on packaging, in a menu, on a business card or in a shop window.

What you can set in the editor above
  • Logo — upload your own file.
  • Colours — set the code, the background or a gradient.
  • Shape and eyes — choose the shape of the elements.
  • Frame — add a caption and set the style.
  • Preset — save the styling for your next QR Codes.
How it works

From an empty field to a code on paper

Four steps, and the first three take a minute. The code is free to download, and there is no account to set up before you begin — it is only needed by the codes that have something to keep.

  1. 1

    Choose what will open

The type tiles are at the top of the page. A link needs an address, a card needs a name and a phone number, a document needs the file itself.

  2. 2

    Style it, if you like

A logo in the middle, your own colours, the shape of the squares, a frame with a caption. This step is optional: a black-and-white code reads exactly the same.

  3. 3

    Download and print

PNG for a screen and a messenger, SVG for the print shop: it falls apart neither on a business card nor on a banner the height of a person.

  4. 4

Edit the target, not the paper

Codes that live in an account can change their target at any moment. The paper stays as it is, and your account shows how many times it has been scanned.

Questions and answers

Common questions about QR Codes

Everything people ask before they have chosen a type: where to start, what is needed for print, how the account and the statistics work. Questions about a particular type of code sit on its own page.

Getting started
What is a QR Code?
A square pattern with data written into it: a page address, a line of text, a phone number, the settings of a network. A phone camera recognises the pattern, reads what is written and offers the action that fits — open, call, save, connect. In essence it is a way of passing a string of characters from paper into a phone without making anyone type it by hand.
Where do I start if I have never made a QR Code?
At the top of this page choose the tile with the thing that should open, fill in a couple of fields and press the button. The finished code appears right there, and it can be downloaded at once, with nothing to set up. Styling, an account and statistics come later, and only if you want them.
Which type should I choose if I am not sure?
Start from what the person should see. There is a ready page — take “Website link”. You need to show a document — “PDF” or “File”. You want to be saved into contacts — “Business card”. The type switches with one tap, so you can try a few and keep the one you like.
Do I need a separate app to scan a code?
No. Point the camera and wait a second — the phone shows a prompt you only have to tap. That is how it has worked on iPhone and Android for several years now. A separate scanner might be needed only by a very old handset.
Do I need an account?
It depends on the code. Wi-Fi, text, phone and email fit into the pattern itself — they are made and downloaded without signing up. But a file, a page you put together and the freedom to change everything after printing have to be kept somewhere: that is what an account is for.
How much does it cost to make a QR Code?
Making a code and downloading it is free. Payment comes in where we start keeping and counting things for you: files, the pages you put together, statistics, changing the target of a code that is already printed. What the free plan gives and what the paid ones add is written on the pricing page.
Does a QR Code expire?
The pattern itself does not — it reads the same ten years from now. Codes with the data inside them live on their own and depend on nobody. A code that leads to a page in your account lives as long as the account does, within what its plan allows — and it can be given an expiry date on purpose, if it was made for a single event.
Can I use the service from a phone?
Yes, the whole site opens on a phone: the types, the fields, the styling, the downloads. Building codes is still easier on a large screen, while a phone is good for looking into your account and seeing how they are being scanned.
Styling and print
Can I put my logo in the middle — will the code still read?
Yes. The pattern deliberately carries spare capacity: some of the squares can be covered, and the phone works out what is missing from the rest. The logo sits in exactly that spare capacity, so a code with one reads like any other.
What size should a QR Code be printed?
Count from the distance: the side of the code is about a tenth of the distance it will be pointed at from. From a table a small square is enough, from a shop window one the size of a palm, from the front of a building noticeably larger. In doubt, take the larger one: a camera catches a big code at once.
What makes sure a code reads?
Three things. Do not stretch it — a square has to stay a square. Keep the contrast: a dark pattern on a light background is recognised best. And leave a quiet zone around it about four squares wide — the camera needs to see where the pattern ends.
Can a code be printed on fabric, glass or metal?
Yes, if the surface does not glare and the pattern does not ripple on it. On matte fabric, card and plastic it is all fine. For gloss, film and metal make a test under the same light there will be on site: a bright glare can cover part of the pattern.
What form does the finished code download in?
Two files to choose from. PNG is an ordinary picture, easy to drop into an email, a presentation or a post. SVG is a drawing: it stays crisp at any size, which is why print shops ask for it.
How do I test a code before a print run?
Print one copy at the real size and point different phones at it — yours and someone else’s, iPhone and Android. Try it from the distance and in the light there will be on site. Five minutes of testing saves a print run.
Should a code be labelled, or does it speak for itself?
It is worth labelling. A square with the word “Menu”, “Review” or “Wi-Fi” gets a camera pointed at it far more often than a bare one: people want to know what will open. The caption goes right into the frame of the code — a frame like that is there in the styling.
Can I make all my codes in one style?
Yes. The styling you settle on — the colours, the shape of the squares, the logo, the frame — is saved in your account and applied to the next codes with one tap. And a batch made in one go comes out all in that same style.
Account and management
Can I make many codes at once instead of one at a time?
Yes, your account has bulk generation for that: you bring a table with the list and take away an archive of finished codes — one per row, all in the same styling. That is how codes are made for a batch of goods, for table numbers or for passes for the people attending.
Can two of us work from one account?
Yes, on the higher plans. A colleague is invited by email, and from then on they see the same codes and the same statistics — handy when one person prints the stickers and another keeps an eye on them. How many places each plan gives is written on the pricing page.
How do I keep order when there are a lot of codes?
Codes go into folders, and folders go into each other: a branch, and inside it the menus and the reviews. The ones you need are starred, the rest are found by search. That is why a code is worth giving a human name straight away: six months from now “Code 47” will tell you nothing.
Do I need to keep the picture of the code myself?
Not necessarily. Every code in your account stays there, and any of them downloads again in the same styling, as many times as you like. So a file lost from your computer is not a lost code.
Can I give a code an expiry date or a scan limit?
Yes, for the codes that live in an account. A code is given a date after which it stops leading to its target, and a limit on how many people it lets in. Useful for invitations, coupons and one-off promotions; both settings come off as easily as they go on.
Can the content be closed off with a password?
Yes. Then after the scan the person first sees a password field and only then the document or the page. That is how dealer price lists, internal instructions and anything not meant for a passer-by are shown.
Can I remove a code I no longer need?
Yes, it goes to the bin and stops taking up room in your plan. From there it can be brought back when it is needed again — together with its styling and all the statistics it has gathered.
How many codes can I have?
Codes with the data inside them — as many as you need: once made, they live on without us. Of the ones we keep and look after, as many as your plan gives. The exact numbers are on the pricing page.
Statistics and safety
Can I see how many times a code has been scanned?
For the codes that live in an account, yes: a counter, a chart by day, countries and kinds of device. So not only “how many”, but “when and from where”. Codes with the data inside them lead straight on and never come to us, so statistics are gathered only for the first kind.
Can I see a summary across all my codes at once?
Yes, your account has the overall picture: how many scans have come in over a chosen stretch of time, how they fell across the days and which codes are ahead of the rest. The same summary can be counted for a single folder — for one branch only, say.
What happens to the statistics if I change the target of a code?
They stay where they are. The counter belongs to the code itself, not to what stands behind it, so the scans from before and after the change lie on one chart — and it shows clearly what the swap did to the traffic.
What do you record about the people who scan?
The time, the country, the kind of device, the operating system and the browser, and the page the person came from if there was one. That is enough for statistics and not enough to know who the person is: no name, no email, no street. What you wrote into the code sits in your account — otherwise it could neither be shown to you nor changed.
Who can change what opens behind a code?
Only you and the people you have invited into the account. Editing happens in your account, and the way in is closed with a password, while what people have on paper is a short link: it can be followed, but not changed.
Is it safe to scan someone else’s QR Code?
A code by itself launches nothing: it passes a string to the phone, and the phone shows where that string leads and waits for you to agree. The rule is simple — read the address in the prompt before you tap, and treat a sticker in the street as carefully as a letter from a stranger.
Can the codes I create be used commercially?
Yes. A finished code is yours: print it on packaging, in advertising and in a shop window, in any print run you like. There is no separate charge for impressions or for the size of the run, and the QR technology itself is open and belongs to nobody.
